Established in 1969, the Department of Philosophy at the National Chengchi University (NCCU) was the fourth philosophy department to appear in Taiwan. Initially devoted to undergraduate education for five decades, the department launched the M.A. program in 1990 and the Ph.D. program in 1999, making itself one of the five institutions in Taiwan to offer a full course of study in philosophy.

We are open to major philosophical traditions, and put equal emphasis on Eastern and Western philosophy. In accordance with the characteristic expertise of NCCU as a whole, one of our foci in teaching and research is to explore the philosophical foundations for humanities and the sciences. Hence the three following features in our courses and research projects:
1.  Modern Interpretations of Chinese Philosophy:
We seek to facilitate communication between Western and Chinese philosophies by interpreting the latter in terms of modern philosophical concepts from a comparative perspective.
2.  Explorations of Western Philosophy:
We offer courses covering all aspects of Western philosophy, and focus on the main trends of contemporary philosophy that shape the modern world.
3.   Research on Philosophical Foundations for Humanities and the Sciences:
We promote inter-disciplinary integration between philosophy and the humanities/social sciences by working on methodological issues in the humanities and social sciences and by engaging in dialogue with those disciplines. Recently, we began to promote the interdisciplinary research of ethical, legal and social issues arising from rapid advancements in life sciences and human genetics.
